The Northern Ireland Housing Council has presented a business case to government seeking amendments to Building Regulations governing new private sector housing.

Following a meeting with Minister for Social Development, Margaret Ritchie Chairman, Gerry Gallagher said,

‘For some years now new social housing providers have responsibly built to the Lifetime Homes Standards. This means that homes are much more easily and more economically adapted in future years. This does not happen in the private sector and means that in the long-term the public purse has to spend significant amounts of money (£31m last year) adapting private homes. Building to Lifetime Homes in all sectors could save the public purse millions and at the same time provide better standards and more sustainable homes for everyone”.
